Plot: Alex Hughes, an ex-convict, is on a road trip to Winnipeg to see an old friend. Along the way, he meets the annoying, but vivacious, Vivienne Freeman who manages to bum a ride with him. Just as he begins to warm to this eccentric girl, Alex’s vehicle is in a serious automobile accident that kills Vivienne. After his meeting with the police, Alex decides to speak with Vivienne’s mother. Upon arrival at her home, Alex discovers that the mother, Linda, is a barely functional autistic who convinces him to stay long to take out the garbage the day after the funeral he agrees to arrange. In those few days, Alex discovers new friends and learns more about the uniqueness of Linda even as he struggles to come to terms with his own grief.

What do you think of this descriptive passage?
The night was silent and still. The pale face of the moon gazed upon me, casting a gentle glow. Trudging through the snow, the empty city around me slept soundlessly. The wind whispered through the air, biting at my face and whipping my hair into my eyes. The picturesque meringues of untouched snow decorated the roofs of the buildings like icing on a cake.

The lonely, deserted place was as silent and eerie as a ghost town.

My footprints left deep holes in the thick snow and made a satisfying crunch beneath my feet. I breathed in the crisp air and blew it out in a cloud that disappeared in the breeze. As I continued to blunder through the tundra of a city, I became more and more perplexed. Where was I? I had never been about this location before, yet I was sure I had searched the city a dozen times already. I wandered towards a half buried high-rise flat, it fought its way out of the snow, to read up and kiss the night sky above. I kicked in the cracked glass on a window, it shattered and collapsed under the pressure, leaving me feel a strange, pleasurable feeling of triumph.

As the snow began to drift down in fat flakes, I gingerly climbed through the window, carefully avoiding the shards of glass that still withstood my kick. Sadness flooded through me as my eyes scanned the dark, abandoned room. Discarded cobwebs and dust had claimed their place, giving it the bleak, dismal sensation.
