When believers ask why non-believers don't go around killing each other willy-nilly, is it because they…?
don’t understand that humans have evolved as social creatures? We’ve evolved to rely on each other everyday.
I mean, besides the whole capacity for sympathy and compassion thing we harbor inside, we are social. Even loners like me need other people, and not just for services, but for the mere human need for socializing.
I think that’s one thing people don’t look at, not just believers, but also people like Hobbes when he wrote the Leviathan. He pretty much says humans are loners out to cut each others’ throats and are only social out of necessity. I don’t agree with that. But I’m getting off the subject, what are your opinions? Everybody’s opinions welcome.
I think one of the most insidious lies of religion is that humans without god are monsters.
The truth is that humans, with or without god, are humans. Religion doesn’t make much difference. But of course if religion admitted that, on what would it feed?

I think it’s because they’ve convinced themselves that THEY would act like that without their God to keep them in line.
For them, I say "by all means, please keep your religion."

Paul’s rant in Romans 1 was one of the things that convinced me how wrong the bible could be…
Yours,
futile, foolish, sinful, impure, degraded, lustful, indecent, perverted, depraved in mind, wicked, evil, greedy, envious, murderous, strifeful, deceitful, malicious, gossiping, slanderous, insolent, arrogant, boastful, disobedient to parents, senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless.
(And I’ve missed a few)
If Paul and the bible are right. If.
I did get a speeding ticket once, sixteen years ago, but oddly I get on well with my parents.
I went shopping today and must have passed dozens of throats I could have ripped out*. I just didn’t feel the urge, and not one of them tried to murder me…
I can get to social values (and I’m a loner too) as you say from evolutionary history, and the observation of social animals.
C S Lewis (as a Christian) got there by a different route and showed the non-biblical and non-religious basis of morality in "The Abolition of man", (see below.)
*I’d have got away with it too, if it wasn’t for those pesky kids.
